About the company

Primary is the largest early stage venture firm in the world, with $1 billion in assets under management and a staff of 50 working alongside founders to build unicorns like Alloy, Chief, Electric, K Health, Slice, Vestwell, and many more.

The firm takes a low-volume, high-conviction approach—and devotes unreasonable resources toward making sure founders can succeed. With an Impact team that outnumbers investors 2:1, operational experts spend 100% of their time making hires, signing customers, and enabling future fundraising to supercharge growth. This partnership with top-tier founders makes companies in Primary’s portfolio 2x more likely to raise a Series A and 19x more likely to reach a billion-dollar-plus valuation—a third of Fund I companies are unicorns, less than a decade out.

About the role

Reporting into Primary General Partner Cassie Young, the VP Strategic Finance and Corporate Development sits on Primary’s Impact team and will work deep in the trenches with portfolio companies to help founders and their teams to manage their financial operations, make strategic financial decisions, and raise downstream capital effectively. In this role, you’ll partner closely with portfolio companies by developing and advising on financial models, KPIs, strategy, and capital allocation. As these companies raise equity or debt financing, you’ll also help them tell their stories through numbers and put their best foot forward with investors and lenders (including financial model and data room review). Additionally, you’ll work with Primary’s investment partners to conduct due diligence and frame investment decisions on later-stage portfolio companies in support of Primary’s opportunity fund strategy.

The ideal candidate is someone who has experience managing the finance function at B2B VC-backed startups, completing transactions and due diligence as an M&A banker or later-stage investor, discussing financial topics at the board level, and building and managing budgets and operating plans.

What you’ll do

  • Partner with early-stage companies on strategic planning, key financial infrastructure and processes, and fundraising

  • Be an analytical engine for strategic decision-making at fast-moving companies, with a focus on capital allocation decisions and long-term planning

  • Assist with due diligence, investment decisions, and transactions related to later-stage companies as a part of Primary’s Select (opportunity fund) strategy

  • Maintain a network of finance and accounting leaders with relevant expertise across various industries, stages, processes, and topics for relevant portfolio company introductions

About you

  • 10+ years of finance experience, including leadership roles at VC-backed startups and experience in investment banking, corporate development, private equity, or growth equity; experience with B2B business models is a must-have

  • A strong data-driven mindset with the modeling and analytical skills to define and interpret KPIs / support strategic decision-making across a range of companies, stages and business models

  • Significant experience in due diligence, transaction management, and execution

  • Prior experience in managing and influencing multiple executive stakeholders

  • Detail-oriented and exceptionally organized, with strong project management chops and confidence handling multiple work-streams simultaneously

  • Self-starting and solutions-oriented with comfort in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a strong ability to educate early-stage founders on financial concepts

  • Sound judgment, a high degree of professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Must be available to work at least 3 days a week at Primary’s HQ in NYC
